Healthfinder.gov is a gateway to consumer health information resources provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This resource enables you to find health care providers in your area and national medical organizations and associations from an alphabetical index of subject headings.
Directory of Providers (MedlinePlus)
MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information for consumers from the National Library of Medicine. This section of their site provides links to many different professional directories to help you find health professionals, services and facilities covering a wide range of health topics.
Find a Provider Certified in Integrative Holistic Medicine (American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine)
Integrative Holistic Medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses care of the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. The goal of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine is to train physicians to work in collaboration with their patients, seeing them in their wholeness and helping them to achieve optimal health. Here, you can search for physicians who are board certified in Integrative Holistic Medicine by name, zip code or state. You can also find a helpful checklist at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) on how to select a particular CAM practitioner.
Recognized Physician Directory (The National Committee for Quality Assurance)
The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) is a private nonprofit organization that sets standards for the quality of care and service for health plans. Their Recognized Physician Directory awards quality seals to help individuals find doctors who have demonstrated they meet important standards of care in the areas of back pain, diabetes, stroke and heart disease. In addition, you can search for providers who have been recognized for providing evidence-based care and using information technology to enhance the quality of care (the Physician Practice Connections® award) and primary care providers who use approved management processes to effectively coordinate care (the Physician Practice Connections® – Patient-Centered Medical HomeTM award).
Licensing Status (State Medical Boards)
This is a link to the American Medical Association, which provides a list of every state’s medical boards. Click on your state to get to a database that enables you do background checks on physicians to find out whether they are licensed, when and where they graduated from medical school and whether any disciplinary action has been taken against them.
Board Certification (The American Board of Medical Specialties)
The American Board of Medical Specialties is a non-profit organization that oversees the certification of physician specialists in the United States. This link enables you check whether your physician is board certified in a given specialty and/or sub-specialty.
Healthcare Provider Ratings (Vitals)
Vitals is a private company that enables you to search for a provider by name or speciality or identify who to see for a given symptom or condition. You can narrow your list by zip code and compare up to 3 providers at a time. In addition to patient ratings where they are available, it includes the providers’ contact information, their number of years of clinical experience, board certification status and the medical school they attended and the hospital they are affiliated with (and rankings for both).
Healthcare Provider Ratings (RateMDs)
RateMDs is a private company that enables you to search on providers in the Unites States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. In the U.S. you can search by location and specialty. In addition to patient ratings, it provides contact information and links to the doctors’ state licensing board for further information about them.
Healthcare Provider Ratings (HealthGrades)
HealthGrades is the leading for-profit healthcare ratings company. For a fee, they provide independent ratings, reports and profiles on 650,000 physicians in the U.S. to consumers, corporations, health plans and hospitals. It bundles together much of the abovementioned information on the providers’ location, licensing, board certification, past disciplinary actions, and hospital affiliation, along with patient ratings. If you have already used the free references above to get much of this information, take a look their sample report before you make a purchase to see if you want to pay for any additional information they may provide.
