When you are looking for a hospital or other types of facilities first make sure your healthcare providers treat patients there and that it is covered by your healthcare insurance. For helpful lists of other issues to consider when selecting a hospital or other facilities start with the Joint Commission’s “Helping You Choose Guides.”

• Find hospitals and other facilities for adults and children (see the U.S News/American Hospital Association Directory, Healthfinder, Childrens’ Hospitals, and MedlinePlus Nursing Home and Assisted Living links);

• Ensure the hospital is accredited (see another Joint Commission resource);

• Identify those with highly regarded nursing services (see the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center); and

• Compare hospitals’ quality (see the Department of Health and Human Services, The Commonwealth Fund, Leapfrog and HealthGrades links).
