Joint Commission
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (the Joint Commission or JCAHO, for short) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that is the predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care in the United States. Their committment to patient safety is expressed in this section of their website. In addition to sections covering patient safety goals and educational resources aimed at healthcare providers they provide a resource for patients and families through their Speak Up™ patient safety campaign.
Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
The AHRQ is the lead Federal agency charged with the promotion of evidence-based decision-making to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans. It has a wide range of information for health professionals and consumers. The section on “Quality and Safety” is aimed at healthcare providers and includes links to “Medical Errors and Patient Saftey” and the “Patient Safety Network”, a very comprehensive resource on this topic. The “Consumers & Patients” section has a subheading on “Quality of Care” that includes tips sheets on preventing medical errors for adults and children.
National Patient Safety Foundation
The National Patient Safety Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organization founded in 1997 by the American Medical Association, CNA HealthPro, and 3M with the mission to improve the safety of patients. Its board of directors represents multiple stakeholders including health care providers, health product manufacturers, researchers, legal advisors, consumer advocates, regulators, and policy makers. The website has a Resource Center (see the left hand column of the homepage) with links to resources, organizations and a glossary of terms relating to patient safety.
